July ended in the most wonderful way here at White Pine Institute. We were once again graced by the presence and wisdom of Dr. Huang Huang. This is Dr. Huang’s third year of coming to our Institute to teach and, for me, this was better than ever. Dr. Huang brings some extraordinary qualities to his teaching that can make an experience with him resonate and inspire in many ways.
We all noticed that Dr. Huang uses his big presence and energy to reflect on the power of the classic formulas and on the genius of Zhang Zhongjing.
He is far from meek but all of his sense of self is in service of a larger goal – spreading the miracle of the Jing Fang. He does not ever make it about himself.
Secondly, Dr. Huang Huang is very clear and organized. It is such a pleasure to move through three days of material and really be able to follow along.
Thirdly, the material Dr. Huang presented this time was extremely useful and each point was followed by case studies from his own practice. I know that each student left the weekend empowered and instructed to treat children of all ages with classic formulas.
Finally, Dr. Huang has a unique ability to give his students confidence. He makes each one of us feel that we have the capacity to improve and develop. In this way, Dr. Huang’s students seem to find themselves more inspired to study.
It is important to add that Dr. Huang has an amazing sense of humor. However, almost all of his humor inevitably turns back to the topic of classic formulas.
On the third day of our seminar, Dr. Huang, knowing that I have a horse, wanted, for the first time in his life, to sit on a horse. During lunch we took Dr. Huang to the barn and got him up on Callie. “Huang Wayne” , the Zhong Guo Niu Zai (中國牛仔） Chinese cowboy. Of course at dinner he was talking about how the Gui Zhi type would ride, how the Chai Hu type would ride…..etc…
As a gift to me for organizing the seminar, Dr. Huang gave me a Chinese fan that he had designed and had made himself.
On one side this fan has a list of all of the books that Dr. Huang has published to date. On the other side there are over 70 songs written on the classic formulas. These songs give the ingredients and main indications of the formulas. They also include some of Dr. Huang’s “experiential formulas” such as Ba Wei Chu Fan Tang, Ba Wei Jie Yu Tang and more. This fan is very beautiful and will be framed for the clinic.
For those of you who read Chinese I am posting the poems below:
